The Island Packet

The Island Packet

Island Packet's flagship sailing yacht reminds us why a healthy displacement still makes sense today - well balanced off the wind as well as when close-reaching. And for true long-term cruising, the boat carries  a tremendous payload.

For 25 years, Island Packet has been highly regarded for building  strong, seaworthy sailboats that are tuned to the cruising sailor's needs.

In light air, the 100-horsepower  Yanmar and 300 gallons of fuel gave us confidence to motor sail at 7.5 knots at 3,000 rpm. When the sea breeze had filled in to about 12 knots,  the Island Packet 485 held at about 6 knots on a reach.  In-mast roller furling, well-placed winches (three of which are  electric), and convenient sheeting made sail adjustments easy for the two of us. When we arrived in San Diego pulling into our slip at Harbor Island West Marina, was simple: the optional bow thruster had us backed in without any challenges whatsoever. No dock marks to deal with afterwards, either!

This is a true liveaboard long-range cruiser that will please you wherever you decide to drop the hook. "Critical Mast", the IP 485 offers a healthy choice and reminds us why full-keeled heavy-displacement boats still make the most sense on the world's oceans.
